Kingwood Center - Poetry in the Garden

POETRY COMES TO KINGWOOD CENTER

A class about love, hate, and the path not taken will be coming to Kingwood Center on Thursday evenings, July 21 through August 25 from 6:30 to 8 PM. Poetry in the Garden will examine the incredible ability of words to convey meaning beyond the page on which they sit. Each session will be led by a poet who will present poems from those who have inspired and influenced them throughout their career. Discussion of technique, structure, and meaning will follow. It is a class about the magic of words in a magical setting. Participants are to meet in the Workshop Courtyard. Registration required. No class fee.  No admission/parking fee after 6:00.  Call 419-522-0211 ext. 107 to register and receive readings. Ohio Underground Railroad Whistle-Stop Poetry Tour Kicks Off in Portsmouth

The Ohio Poetry Association (OPA) in partnership with Poets Against Racism & Hate USA (PARH USA) will conduct a whistle-stop poetry tour of historic Underground Railroad stations throughout Ohio. The inaugural program takes place from 10 AM to 5:30 PM on Saturday, February 24, at the Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center , 825 Gallia Street, Portsmouth. With the help of the organizationsā€™ members and community partners, OPA and PARH USA will present a series of poetry readings at historic sites throughout 2024. Each site will feature poets and poems that honor Ohioā€™s legacy on the Underground Railroad and that raise awareness of issues of social justice, hate, and prejudice. OPA and PARH USA Receive Grant for Ohio Underground Railroad Whistle-Stop Poetry Tour

OHIO POETRY ASSOCIATION INC., in conjunction with POETS AGAINST RACISM & HATE USA, Awarded the Trillium Local Activity Grant for Program Commemorating Americaā€™s 250th Anniversary The project is one of 61 community-based projects funded through the America 250-Ohio Commissionā€™s second round of grants, totaling $600,000 In the lead up to Americaā€™s 250th anniversary, Ohio Poetry Association Inc., in conjunction with Poets Against Racism & Hate USA, announced today that it received a Trillium Local Activity Grant from the America 250-Ohio Commission for its project titled ā€œ Ohio Underground RailroadWhistle-Stop Poetry Tour .ā€ This series of events takes place at Underground Railroadā€“related sites around Ohio and features poetry readings, social justice writing workshops, and cultural programming. Odes of October 2024 Contest Winners Announced

OPA is pleased to announce that our judge for 2024, Karen Scott, has chosen the three winners and three runners-up for the 2024 Odes of October contest. First prize is awarded for "Restless Peace," by Jo Anne Moser Gibbons. First prize includes an award of $65 and inclusion in the 2025 issue of Common Threads, as well being published below. Second prize goes to "Scarecrow," by Dr. Anna Cates. This prize includes an award of $25 and appears below. Third prize goes to "Fall," also by Jo Anne Moser Gibbons. This prize includes an award of $10 and appears below.
